spot on marty , brassmonkey is the rack the cannon balls sat on in the old days ( which funny enough were made o brass,)
the cannon balls were made o lead so when it was really cold the lead balls conrtracted (shrunk) quicker than the brass monkey , they then fell through the hole thus the saying "its so cold it would freeze the balls off a brassmonkey "
